From the liner notes:
. . .This set shows three different sides to the work of the woman whom the poet and songwriter Rod McKuen has called ‘A vocal genius’.
Firstly, there is the swinging, rocking chick of the sixties. The one with the cute hairstyles, the high cheek bones and the incredibly short mini-skirts who flitted all over the States and zigzagged the globe taking in Canada, the UK, Scandinavia, Australia and virtually every other country in the world as she shot round the planet at incredible speed. . .
In the UK, she was seen as one of the ‘Princesses of Pop’ – alongside Dusty Springfield, Sandie Shaw, Lulu and Cilla Black. In the States, she was dominant and sold far more than these contemporaries. Dusty had a huge impact in the States in the very late sixties but throughout the main course, Petula was the lady regarded by US record buyers as the girl who came with the British Invasion.
So what a swinging period this was; Mary Quant, Twiggy, The Beatles and Petula – all huge icons of the era. . .
The Second disc is Petula in a mellow mood. I suppose this could be termed her EASY LISTENING Set – although I think that Petula is such an intelligent interpreter of lyric with such a passion burning inside her that she can never be termed easy listening or exactly in the lounge style. . .
The third disc shows Petula as the dramatic diva of her concert performances. . .
So, whether you are most familiar with the Swinging Pet, The Mellow Pet or the Emotional Diva, here is a set, which will allow you to revel in all these aspects of her work and realise what a fine writer she is too.
